Clayton County Democrats Donate to Clayton County Food Shelf.

Clayton County Democrats Chair Brian Bruening delivered donations for the Clayton County Food Shelf to Supervisor Utoni Ruff on Monday June 24, 2024. The food and items were collected and donated by members of the Democrats Central Committee.

“After Governor Kim Reynolds declined federal funding that would have provided additional food assistance to about 240,000 low-income Iowa kids this summer, we decided to take what action we could. Since we don’t have any locally elected Democrats fighting for low-income and working families in the State House, it falls on people like us to step up and help our communities,” said Chair Brian Bruening.

According to Food Shelf Supervisor Ruff, about 150 families visit the Food Shelf on a regular basis, underlining the great need for food assistance in the county. Among the most needed items at the moment include cereals, peanut butter, and canned fruit.

“We hope this small food drive will encourage people, including other civic and political organizations in Clayton County, to donate to the Food Shelf.  These donations have a direct, immediate positive impact on children and families in our neighborhoods,” Chair Bruening added.

Families in need of assistance, or those looking to donate, are encouraged to reach out to the Clayton County Food Shelf at 100 W. Hill Street in Saint Olaf. Phone 563-783-7794
