IPERS Update
IPERS managers recently spoke to the Senate Appropriations Committee. They (again) told legislators that IPERS is in good shape. The meeting took place on Tuesday, February 20, at the Iowa Statehouse.
The committee is chaired by Republican Senator Charles Schneider, who invited the right-wing Reason Foundation to Iowa last summer. That meeting—which was also supported by Governor Reynolds—was about changing IPERS and Iowa’s retirement systems.
At yesterday’s Senate Appropriations Committee meeting, the professional IPERS managers again explained that IPERS is fundamentally sound. The Republican legislators at the meeting backpedaled from their previous support for changing IPERS.
However, many believe the most serious threat to IPERS will come immediately AFTER the 2018 election. Don’t forget that Republicans waited until AFTER the 2016 election to suddenly make devastating changes to the rights of public workers.
Keep speaking up for IPERS! Yesterday’s meeting showed that your efforts make a difference.
